Morphological Characteristics
Biflagellate, oval or heart-shaped. The cell surface (lorica) is covered in monomorphous coccoliths with highly developed edges (calyptroliths) In the more or less concave stomatal area, the calyptroliths may be narrow and elliptical. From the lorica emerge two flagella of equal length (double the length of the entire cell) and a haptonema (5-8µm). In the cytoplasm there are 2 chloroplasts.
