• Asterionella bleakeleyi var. notata: Grunow (1867)

Cells joined together on the expanded side of the cell into straight or helical colonies. In girdle view the cell appears to be linear, in valve view it is also linear but with different extremities: the lower extremity broadens whereas the upper extremity is rounded. The lower extremity, slightly swollen, features a transversal structure and in the basal part there are small areolae arranged in radial striae. In the cytoplasm, distributed throughout the cell, are numerous chloroplasts.
