Species details
Rarely solitary, more usually found in chains of two or three cells. The shape of the cells varies from spherical to lenticular (oblate ellipsoid), with the valves highly convex. The valve is divided into sectors. Areolae and rimoportulae are visible on the surface while the edge is smooth. The cytoplasm contains several small rounded chloroplasts, highly pigmented and arranged in a star shape.
This genus is benthic. The cells attach themselves to the substrate by means of polysaccharide threads.
If the girdle is very shallow, the volume can be calculated as a spere.
Toxicity:Not reported.
Resistence Stages:Not reported.
