Morphological Characteristics

Filaments solitary, with thin, simple, colorless, firm sheaths, rarely false-branched (trichomes). Trichomes cylindrical, isopolar, straight, waved, coiled to more or less screw-like or spirally coiled, narrow, uniseriate, usually not narrowed to the ends, indistinctly constricted or unconstricted at the crosswalls, always nonmotile. Cells cylindrical, rarely shorter than wide, usually longer than wide (to several times), without aerotopes or with facultative polar aerotopes, sometimes with solitary granules. End cells rounded or narrowed-rounded, always without calyptra. Cells pale gray-blue, blue-green, yellowish or olive-green.

Planktonic, in lakes, reservoirs of temperate, tropical zones, several species presumably nordic.
