Morphological Characteristics

Colonies free floating, composed of very fine, indistinct, colourless stalked gelatinous material, semicircular subgroups of 4-6-8 cells are formed within the colonies. Cells cylindrical, rod-shaped to kidney-shaped, always slightly arcuate, usually covered with a thin layer of indistinct, colourless slime (staining).

  • Cell Width: from 0.8 to 1.2 µm
  • Diameter of colony: from 12 to 29 µm
Distribution
Freshwater, brackishwater, planktonic in shallow, hypertrophic lakes. Sporadic in Baltic region.
 
Distribution: Australia and New Zealand: Queensland (Bostock & Holland 2010).
