Morphological Characteristics

Colonies microscopic, more or less spherical or irregular in outline, sometimes elongate, free floating, with more or less regularly (usually not very densely) distributed cells. Colonial mucilage colourless, usually overlapping all the cells by a narrow, hyaline, sometimes diffluent margin. Cells  oval to cylindrical, straight, pale blue-green or grey-blue, sometimes with minute aerotopes.

Distribution
Freshwater, planktonic in mesotrophic and slightly eutrophic, usually large water bodies: lakes, ponds, reservoirs. Distributed in temperate zones, common in colder regions.

 

Distribution:  Europe: Germany (Täuscher, 2011). South America: Brazil (Werner, 2010). Australia and New Zealand: Queensland (Bostock & Holland 2010).
