Solitary, of small dimensions, thecate. The cingulum is posteriorly positioned and divides the cell into two parts: the epitheca and the hypotheca. The former is roughly double the size of the latter, giving the cell a characteristic mushroom shape. The cell contains chloroplasts and a nucleus.

The theca is very thin and so the cells can seem athecate. This species is capable of photosynthesis and heterotrophic feeding. It has been observed to feed on Skeletonema costatum and Synechococcus in the laboratory (Jeong et al. 2005). It can also feed on bacteria (Seong et. al. 2006)
