The cell is thecate, of large dimensions, solitary. The body of the cell is wide. The triangular epitheca narrows into an apical horn. The hypotheca is prolonged into two highly developed antapical horns, which curve until they are almost parallel to the apical horn.
- Cell Length: from 70 to 90 µm
Cosmopolitan, marine, reported in warm to tropical waters.
Distribution: Ireland: Galway (Boyd, 1973); Europe: Great Britain (Parke & Dixon, 1976), Croatia (Vilicic et al., 2009), Ireland (Boyd, 1973, McDermott & Raine, 2006), Romania (Caraus, 2002); Atlantic Islands: Canary Islands (Gil-Rodríguezet al., 2003).
North America: Nova Scotia (Kim, Garbary and McLachlan, 2004); Australia and New Zealand: Victoria (Day et al., 1995); Antarctic and the subantarctic islands: Antarctica (McMinn & Scott, 2005).
In some cells the right antapical horn has been observed to curve to the right.
