Synonyms
  • Melosira costata: Greville (1866)
Morphological Characteristics

Solitary or joined in colonies by the fusion of marginal processes so as to form long, thin, usually straight chains. The space between adjacent cells is often longer than the themselves. In girdle view, the frustule is cylindrical, while in valve view it appears roughly circular. Between the mantle and the valve surface is a ring of fultoportulae, near which is a rimoportula. In the terminal valve of the colony, from the sub-central rimoportula emerges a long tubular structure. There are two chloroplasts per cell and a central nucleus.
