Morphological Characteristics

Cells solitary or in pairs, rare bigger groups, embedded in broad gelatinous matrix. Cells fusiform, with pointed apices, surrounded by mucilaginous, seldomly-layered sheath of different width. The chloroplast is single and parietal, laminate, cup- or girdle-shaped, straight or spiral, usually with one or two pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction known only by aplanospores. Multiplication of cells by vegetative cell division. Sexual reproduction unknown. Elakatothrix widely distributed planktonic algae in freshwater; juveniles may be epiphytic.
