Solitary or joined in colonies. The frustule can various shapes from fusiform to triradiate and oval depending on environmental conditions.

- Fusiform cells: apical axis: from 25 to 35 µm
Coastal waters.
Distribution: as Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Europe: France (Rech et al., 2005), Germany (Toepel et al., 2005); North America: Nova Scotia (Kim, Garbary and McLachlan, 2004).
One of the few Bacillariophyceae of which the genome has been sequenced.
