Morphological Characteristics

Colonies free floating, initially more or less spherical, tridimensional, later elongate to irregular, reticulate, multicellular. Colonial mucilage colourless, fine (staining), enveloping the whole net. Cells within the colony form pseudofilamentous rows, initially with large distances between cells (7-35 µm), later cells closer to one another. Cells oval to rod-shaped, straight or sometimes slightly curved, with visible chromatoplasma, yellowish or pale blue-green, without aerotopes.

  • Cell Length: from 1.5 to 1.5 µm
  • Cell Width: from 0.8 to 1 µm
  • Length of colony: up to 150 µm
Distribution
Freshwater, planktonic in eutrophic lakes.
 
Distribution:  North America: Arkansas (Smith, 2010). Australia and New Zealand: Queensland (Bostock & Holland, 2010).
