Morphological Characteristics
Solitary or joined in fan-shaped colonies that attach themselves by the smallest extremity, with a gelatinous base, to other algae or to a substrate. The valves are different sizes, the upper one larger than the lower one. The pseudoraphe is distinct. In the cell there may be numerous small (or few and large) chloroplasts.
