Species details
Cells joined in straight long chains composed of 6-12 cells. In girdle view the cells appear cylindrical, while in valve view they appear circular. Each cell has 6-12 setae arranged in a radial pattern. The setae of two adjacent cells bond at the base before forking again after a certain distance. The aperture between the cells is relatively large. The internal setae (between cells in the chain) lie in the valvar plane perpendicular to the axis of the chain. The terminal setae of the cells at the two extremities of the chain are thicker and have spines arranged in a spiral pattern; they point towards the inside of the chain. There are a number of small round chloroplasts arranged along the cell wall.
