- Coscinodiscus radiatus var. asteromphalus : Ehrenberg (1854)
- Coscinodiscus asteromphalus var. conspicua : Grunow A. (1883)
- Coscinodiscus asteramphalus var. genuina : Grunow A. (1884)
Solitary. In valve view the cells are circular in shape, while in girdle view they appear slightly convex with a relatively long pervalvar axis. The central area of the valve surface is depressed and a central rosette of large polygonal areolae can be seen. These areolae, arranged in a radial pattern, are almost all the same size except that the ones closest to the margin of the valve are smaller. There are two large labiate processes (rimoportulae). Numerous large chloroplasts are dispersed throughout the cell.
- Striae in 10 µm: from 4 to 4 n°
- Cell Diameter: from 80 to 400 µm
- Areolae in 10µm: from 3 to 5 n°
