Morphological Characteristics

Solitary. In valve view the cells have an elliptical-discoid shape. The valves are characterised by a hyaline central area (which may be positioned in the centre or to one side), divided into sectors of different sizes by hyaline rays emanating from the central area and almost reaching the valve margin. One ray is visibly narrower than the others. Numerous chloroplasts are distributed in the cell or organised in rays.

Distribution

Marine, planktonic.

Notes

The genus is similar to Asterolampra, from which it differs in having one extra ray and thus being asymmetrical
