Morphological Characteristics

Solitary, crescent-shaped, also known as green algae. Unlike most taxa belonging to the Closteriaceae family, individuals of this genus are not divided into two compartments separated by a narrow bridge or isthmus. At the the extremities of the cell, which can be pointed or rounded, there are two vacuoles. The cell wall may be smooth or decorated with longitudinal striae or perforated all over its surface by pores that emit a mucous-like substance that makes the cell capable of autonomous movement. In the cytoplasm there are numerous elongated chloroplasts and pyrenoids and a nucleus positioned in the central part of the cell.

Freshwater environments.

Notes
