Morphological Characteristics

Filaments solitary, free-floating, regularly or irregularly spirally or screw-like coiled, with nearly circular coils (trichomes). Sheaths firm, narrow, colourless. Trichomes cylilndrical, pale blue-green or greyish green, not constricted at cross-walls, not attenuated at the ends, rarely with solitary granules. Apical cell rounded, not attenuated.

Distribution
Planktic, in lakes of temperate zone, sometimes in salty waters (Baltic sea); known mainly from northern Europe.

Europe: Britain (Whitton et al. 2003), Romania (Caraus 2002), Spain (Aboal 1996), Sweden (Skuja 1948). North America: Arkansas (Smith 2010). Asia: Nepal (Rai, Rai & Jha 2010).
