Morphological Characteristics
In girdle view the frustule is arcuate, while in valve view it is elliptical. The poles are rounded. On the upper valve there is a pseudo-raphe and radial or transversal punctate striae. On the lower valve there is a true raphe and a central nodule. The cells have no chloroplasts. The genus includes about 68 species.
Distribution
The cells live on algae and aquatic plants to which they attach themselves by mucilaginous secretions.
